So one thing I didn't expect when I went raw was the huge reduction in my gas bill for my stove! I thought for sure the electrical bill would even it out because of dehydrating, which it turns out I do less of than I thought I would initially. Which means that as I am not buying food when out that is cooked, there is a small impact there as well.
Then there was the weird freedom of going to the produce section and looking at it all as 'quick take away food'.
This brings my simply question: The less tangible benefits of going raw. Anyone else find crazy little excitements like this in their diet/lifestyle choice?

Re: unexpected Raw Vegan bonus perk
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 12:41 PMyes, i totally know what you mean about the grocery store!
The produce section is usually off to the left or right of the main entrance, so shopping goes much quicker. You just run in, grab whatever OG fruits and veggies look good, and you're out of there.
The first 6 months of the raw diet i did buy stuff at regular grocery stores that had organics, and then the rest at natural foods markets. Then i was invited to join a co-op for artists and get surplus produce direct from a delivery service that sources independent farms whenever possible. Talk about saving money, my grocery bill has been cut in half (the rest is food for my kids, the nut butters & cacao and the nuts and seeds i purchase from growers) because we are getting this stuff for free. Well, i make donations to the co-op, but still i'm paying less than half of what i was paying before, and for much fresher stuff.
At first i found it much harder to feed myself than ever before. But nearly a year later, it's a breeze. Cutting the cords to the foods i was hooked on was the hardest part. This afternoon i was the snack mom at my daughter's preschool and while i provided croissants and fruit for the kids, i sat there nibbling on sprouted lentils which filed me up quite nicely. (some of the kids even tried them, which was cool). My favorite bonus perk is that i can get by on so little food and still feel satisfied and healthy.
