anyone here play sports? if so, which? and how do you handle your body's increased needs?
any weight lifters? i think i've mentioned that i work out with weights in addition to astanga and cardio classes, and i'm finding i'm not able to keep up with myself. mentally, i can endure most anything, but my body's showing signs of exhaustion of late. and my coworker just commented on the dark circles under my eyes. i've been sleeping an average of 5 hours a night for the past few years, but i did just start a new job which has - you know what? nevermind. i'm working 40 hours instead of 18 a week now - duh. maybe that's why my body's tired, and possibly needing more from me. so much for being she-ra.

Re: raw athletes?
Sun, September 4, 2005 - 1:17 PMhello angelska,
i am an athlete.. i played tennis, volleyball, basketball, track for high school and played those while a vegetarian. recently i got to know raw foods. i can tell you that my experience for fatigue it is impotant to be aware of your diet and listen to your body. it is easy to get a deficiency, iron is big one. eat lots of variety in fruits and veggies. i think that this is most important so you observe the effect that foods have on you. it may be likely with a raw diet to become allergic to some ingredients like dairy or similar products and these can make your digestive system work harder to cause fatigue. protein is essential for hard workouts. actually i try not to eat too much soyy because that is rough to digest.. fermentation. so likewise i eat a variety of protein like nuts, beans, avocado. about the soma i think sleep is important and i gets really tired without it. i avoid excessive carbohydrates to lessen energy and have a deeper sleep, this is all i rely on y'know. good luck.

Re: raw athletes?
Tue, September 13, 2005 - 9:31 AMHey, it's tonya kay from the post mention above. Yea, I've been veg for 21 years, 12 of which are vegan and 3 of which are raw. I performed in STOMP for 2 1/2 years which is the hardest thing I have ever done physically as an athlete. Meanwhile, I was lifting at the gym, taking dance class, going dancing and often hiking the beautiful new cities I discovered while touring. Now off the road, I am still a professional dancer and have found that in addition to poi spinning for the upperbody and core, dance class for the sheer pro love of it, go-going at the club for the ego and street education on movement, hiking for the fresh air and sunshine, Bikram Yoga is really a complimentary active release to it all.
Anyway, as a raw athlete in STOMP, I was experiencing a lot of injuries (this show is brutal). I contacted a vegan Ironman champion friend of mine and asked, "is there such thing as overtraining?" addicted to the body as many athletes become....He responded, "there is no such thing as overtraining, only underrecovery". My life changed in that moment.
Don't listen to the raw fooders who tell you you only need 3 hours of sleep / nite. Maybe they do. But what do YOU need. Remain flexible and listen to your body (Patient: Heal Thyself) all the time. There is only one cure for exhaution or tiredness, athlete or no, and that is sleep. Seems simple. Be flexible to not force your old way of being on your new self. Unless of course you want to stay as you were, but that is contrary to growth.
Persoanlly, I don't worry about protien and I have lots of insight on this, but my insight again, is based on me listening to my body. I think it is important that you do the experiements for your body. The only experiments which matter.

Re: raw athletes?
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 4:44 PMhmmm...I have never met anyone who is absolutely bagged only getting 5 hours of sleep, but since you've been doing it, well, there you go. All I've ever heard is you should be sleeping eight hours a night. I feel great after eight hours, but everyone is different. The reason behind the number is to get a proper REM cycle, which takes four hours. So if you sleep eight hours a night you'll be getting two complete REM cycles. I find when I wake up during an incomplete REM I'm much more tired.
This might sound weird, and I doubt you are experiencing this, but I have a Heal Your Body book which says fatigue/lethargy is caused by boredom. This seems right for me, and it might take some deep thinking to find out if you are bored. For example, I was just without a job for a few weeks, and didn't have much to do, but felt tired all the time. Yep, serious boredom. I personally love the feeling of being completely exhausted at the end of the day, but dark circles are no good.
I don't know if any of that was helpful. (I'm also not raw, but am vegan, so you really have to do what feels right for you. -
